The burning of sacred plants as an ancient indigenous ceremony to cleanse the spirit and space of negative energy goes back thousands of years. Working with and understanding the Spirit of Plant medicines, Sage has spiritual cleansing properties that helps our auric field and physical body stay clear of negative thoughts, energies, vibrations or entities. This knowledge has been carried by our indigenous ancestors for generations, and many people today who are attuned to the Earth and spiritual energy understand the healing power of smudging, and practice it daily to cleanse their home and bodies spiritually. Now, a new scientific study reveals that it does more than just heal and cleanse the aura, it also measurably reduces the count of dangerous bacteria in the air, even 24 hours later.
The study, entitled “Medicinal Smoke Reduces Airborne Bacteria” stated that:
We have observed that 1 hour treatment of medicinal smoke emanated by burning wood and a mixture of odoriferous and medicinal herbs (havan sámagri=material used in oblation to fire all over India), on aerial bacterial population caused over 94% reduction of bacterial counts by 60 min and the ability of the smoke to purify or disinfect the air and to make the environment cleaner was maintained up to 24 hour in the closed room. Absence of pathogenic bacteria Corynebacterium urealyticum, Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens, Enterobacter aerogenes (Klebsiella mobilis), Kocuria rosea, Pseudomonas syringae pv. persicae, Staphylococcus lentus, and Xanthomonas campestris pv. tardicrescens in the open room even after 30 days is indicative of the bactericidal potential of the medicinal smoke treatment. We have demonstrated that using medicinal smoke it is possible to completely eliminate diverse plant and human pathogenic bacteria of the air within confined space.”
Using sage to smudge a room, can reduce the bacteria count by 94%, and even 24 hours later, the room was still clear. This is good news for anyone who wants to live a more natural, healthy lifestyle, because the ‘modern’ solution to cleansing the air in our homes, is to spray chemicals like Lysol, which we then inhale. Using traditional plant medicine like sage to smudge and clear our homes of airborne bacteria, is not only safer but also healthier, more environmentally conscious, and has the added benefit of clearing our negative psychic energy, entities, stagnant energy or harmful thoughtforms that can influence the way we feel mentally, spiritually, emotionally and physically in our homes.
Beginners Guide – How to Smudge Your Home:
1. Take some sage, usually White Sage or Desert Sage – and place it in a heatproof bowl. Many people use abalone shells to burn sage, but be aware that to some cultures, burning anything in an abalone shell is considered offensive, so be aware of the local cultural ways and try to honor the land that you live on by doing a bit of research before using an abalone shell. A really good alternative is a heavy brass bowl, a clay bowl filled with some sand, or in a pinch, an old metal coffee can with some sand in the bottom of it.
2. Light the loose sage, or sage wand, and move from room to room, gently waving the sage and taking care not to drop any burning ashes into carpeting or furniture, try to keep the sage wand over your bowl. Make sure smoke gets into any stagnant places like dark corners, closets and bathrooms. It’s good to open a window or a door, to give any Spirits or entities that don’t belong there, a way to clearly leave the premises as you smudge.
3. As you smudge, say a little prayer, thanking Creator for the blessing of this sage, thanking the Sage for sacrificing itself so that you can be healthy and have a healthy home, ask for your home to be blessed and for any energies that are not of love, to please leave. If you are good at visualizing, you can visualize the sage smoke filling your home with light and love, and dissolving any dark or heavy energies there.
4. Make sure when you are done, that you extinguish your sage wand, this is where having a little bit of sand in the bottom of a bowl is helpful. Press firmly down on the end of the wand to smother any burning embers, and afterwards, put your wand into the sand just in case, to prevent it from relighting.
If the smoke is a bit thick, you can open another window for a few minutes to help some of the smoke clear out, but remember that the sage smoke is healing, cleansing and meant to positive, allowing it to linger will help to purify the space further.
